Transferring Pension Benefits to the HEB Manitoba Plan

If you transfer pension credits from another plan into the HEB Manitoba Plan, we'll treat those credits as if you had always been a member of our plan.

What this means for you:

When you retire, your entire pension will be calculated using our benefit formula and rules, regardless of where you originally earned the different portions of your credited service.

The more credited service you have at retirement, the higher your monthly pension payment will be.

Am I eligible for a transfer?

To qualify to transfer a pension benefit to the HEB Manitoba Plan, you must meet these requirements:

  • You enrolled in the Plan and started making contributions as of your first day of employment in a pension-eligible position
  • You started contributing to our plan within no more than three years of leaving your former pension plan
  • Past relationships have been resolved. If you have a former spouse or common-law partner, they must have either received or waived any amount of your previous pension they are entitled to before we can process your transfer.

Yes, I am eligible. What’s Next?

Now that you know you are eligible, select the type of transfer that applies to you.

Request a Reciprocal Transfer

1. Download the Reciprocal Transfer Request for Information form if you want to transfer your pension benefit from one of these partner plans:

  • Brandon University Retirement Plan
  • Civil Service Superannuation Board
  • CUPE Employees' Pension Plan
  • Public Service Superannuation Act
  • Community Agencies Retirement Plan
  • Municipal Employees Pension Plan
  • Teachers' Retirement Allowances Fund (TRAF)

2. Return the completed form to us.

Request a Commuted Value Transfer

If you do not belong to one of our reciprocal partner plans, you may be eligible for a commuted value transfer. This option may allow you to transfer the cash equivalent (or a portion) of your pension benefits from a former plan to purchase credited service in our plan.

To request a commuted value transfer:

1. Download the Commuted Value Transfer Request for Information form

2. Provide Part B to your former pension plan administrator to complete and return to you. Make sure to tell them not to send any funds until they receive our formal request.

3. After you get part B and any accompanying documents back from your former pension administrator:

Complete Part A and return Part A and Part B to us together with a photocopy of one of the following proof of age documents:

  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
  • Citizenship certificate
  • Baptismal certificate

What Happens Next?

Once we receive all the required CV or reciprocal transfer documents from you and your former pension administrator, we'll:

  • Review your file for eligibility
  • Calculate how much pensionable service you can purchase
  • Send you your transfer options

Important Things to Know

  • Transfer limits apply - There are restrictions on how much we can accept and how much credited service you can purchase.
  • Your patience is appreciated - The commuted value transfer process is complex. Please allow 12-24 months for the transfer to be completed.
  • The amount available for transfer is calculated by pension experts and includes both your service time and contributions.
  • **FOR RECIPROCAL TRANSFERS ONLY** Sometimes the money available from your old plan might not cover the full cost of equivalent service in our plan, but you would have the option to pay the difference to purchase that service.
